For the last 39 years, my father has stood by my side in life and in bike racing. Last week marked the passing of his life after 10 years battling five bouts of cancer. Many of you had the wonderful fortune of meeting Bob on the sidelines of a bike race or triathlon somewhere in the US. Whether he be ringing a cowbell, honking horns, or chucking me a wicked-fast bottle hand-up during crunch time, my Dad was there.

And when he wasn’t at a race, he was making the sweet town of Iowa City a better place, volunteering at our family church, the hospital, raising money to improve the community, or helping fill sandbags during a summer flood. My father had so much to give and so much to teach … and I am grateful for every lesson learned, for all the love I felt.

For you new racers, I don’t know if you missed the pleasure of meeting Bob Henderson. For the seasoned racers who either had the fun of BS’ing with pops after a race, watching Bob knock Gene-o off his bike in Galena during a sticky high-five, to the Dewey chants at Snake Alley, and the free floor space for sleeping at Casa Henderson for race weekends…. Bob knew no strangers. Bob cut a wide swath. Bob loved with every breath he took. He was my father, and I am so proud to say that I am his son.

Thank you all for your supportive and caring emails, letters, and texts during this difficult time. The kindness and collection of memories has touched me greatly.

It has been an insano spring for the good. Thanks to all who have kept the shop super busy! Racing season has been in full swing with Silver Cycling/Hollywood Cycles showing impressive finishes in MANY local and regional competitions. It’s great to be at the races and see the colors flying high. Speaking of flying high, congrats Kristy Kreme on your SPAM Jam win!!!

Silver Cycling Team Clothing: A wide variety of items are available, including team jackets, shorts, skin suits, jerseys, arm warmers, etc. To get these, you must go to the Silver Cycling website at www.silvercycling.org. Congratulations on the ‘09 cycling season. Shout outs to our notable finishes so far in the season go to Sam & Eric Oftedahl for finishing 1st & 2nd in the MNSCS Mtn Bike Series; Merrill Lutsky taking 1st in ROY for Jr. Men 15+; Dave Herbert for winning ROY in tha Men’s 50+; and for the Hellians sweep of Women’s Cat 4 ROY - Kristy Kreme Henderson in 1st, Jackie “the OC” Carlson in 2nd, and Madonna “Madone” Lindgren in 3rd. Heck, I’m not even doing too bad finishing 6th in the Pro Mtn Bike class and getting edged out of 6th by none other than Stick Lavick on the road.

And to think, it’s just the start of the fun season…. Cyclocross season is just beginning, and I’ve not yet begun to define myself.

Nature Valley Grand Prix is coming to town! I tried my best to qualify to race in this year’s NVGP, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand granades…and close I was. So now it’s on to what I do best - Partyin’ on and Guerilla Marketing!!! That’s right…. Fly your freak flag high.

Yep, I gotta lot of these flags with Freak the Lion on ‘em. If you wave ‘em and get yourself a sweet picture in a print media (magazine, paper…), I’ll set you up! So get it on, get it up, get yerself out to Uptown Friday night and get your Freak On!!!

Unbelievable, but that’s racing

This past weekend, I did my favorite winter activity - Ice Racing! An amazing day of 35+ degree weather after a full month of below-zero temps and an amazing crowd made this year’s race extra special. It was the City of Lake Loppet that stepped up & put on an awesome race. The Hwood Army represented well with Kristy Kreme taking 2nd in the women’s race, honorary Army member Tyson Meyer destroying the B Class for an uncontested victory, and I set out to do what I do every year and crush the expert race with my teammate the Chucker 1-9. Everything was aligned for me to pull of a killer victory, but with a half a lap to go…UNBELIEVABLE! A rear flat foiled my victory as I tried to get to the line before the chase group closed the gap, but to no avail. Luckily, the Chucker had enough energy to push on for the victory. First and third ain’t too bad.

The crowd was UNBELIEVABLE!! Over 100 strong.
